Thomas Ferens Lecture Competition

As a Universities Scheme Lodge, Juno Lodge places a strong emphasis on academia, learning, and personal development. In keeping with these principles, the Lodge holds an annual short lecture as a dedicated initiative to encourage research, presentation skills, and the sharing of Masonic knowledge in an accessible and engaging way.

This initiative takes the form of The Juno Lodge: Thomas Ferens Lecture Competition, an annual competition open to eligible entrants, with the requirement that each lecture has a clear Masonic link. Lectures may explore history, symbolism, education, or wider Masonic themes, provided they align with the educational ethos of the Lodge. Where images or visual material are used, entrants must ensure that permission has been obtained from the relevant copyright holder.

The lecture judged to be of the highest standard is awarded the title of Thomas Ferens Lecturer for the ensuing year. The successful entrant is formally appointed at Juno Lodge’s regular meeting in June and is presented with the Thomas Ferens Lecture Shield, permanently engraved with their name. In addition, the lecturer receives a prize and is invited to dine at the festive board as a guest of the Lodge, recognising their contribution to Masonic learning and education.

The competition has already attracted a high standard of entries and speakers, reflecting the value placed on education within Juno Lodge. Recent winners include:

  • 2023 – W. Bro. James Steele, ProvAGDC, Juno Lodge No. 10001
‘An Introduction to the Universities Scheme’
  • 2024 – W. Bro. Matt Clark, PPJGD, Agricola Lodge No. 1991
‘The History of the Masonic Peace Memorial, now known as Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London'
  • 2025 – Bro. Karl Lycett, St. Lawrence Lodge No. 2078
    ‘Freemasonry in Marble’

Through the Thomas Ferens Lecture Competition, Juno Lodge continues to promote scholarly enquiry, celebrate excellence in Masonic education, and uphold the values of the Universities Scheme by fostering learning both within and beyond the Lodge.
