Joining Freemasonry

Juno Lodge 10001

If you are considering joining Freemasonry for the first time, you will initially be known as a Candidate or Initiate.

While Freemasonry offers something for many people, membership of our Lodge is selective. We do not judge on age, race, religion or social background. Instead, we seek men of good character, strong values and integrity.

Equally important is ensuring that Juno Lodge is the right fit for you.

The information below explains the first steps in beginning your Masonic journey.

If you would like to know more, please get in touch, we would be delighted to speak with you and help you take your first steps.

Submit your Interest here

Telephone Discussion

A member of the lodge will call you to introduce themselves and arrange a face to face discussion.

In Person Chat

This will involve a couple of members of the lodge meeting up with you, at a mutually convenient place, normally a Cafe or a Bar!

Ballot - In Lodge

This is when your name and details will be read out in open lodge and we will have a vote! This is where the phrase Blackballed comes in!

Initiation Date

This is YOUR day! This is when you are invited to our lodge - at around 1830hrs. You will be guided through your ceremony. This is the most daunting, exciting and nerv-racking date in your masonic career! BUT please note that every single member of all lodges, have gone through the same!

Blackballed

What does it mean?

The term blackballed comes from historic voting practices used in Freemasonry and private members’ clubs during the 18th and 19th centuries.

When a candidate applied for membership, existing members voted in secret using balls placed into a ballot box. A white ball signified approval, while a black ball signified rejection.  A single black ball was enough to exclude a candidate, and because the vote was secret, the decision was final and anonymous.

Over time, the phrase to blackball someone entered wider use, coming to mean to reject, exclude, or veto someone, particularly where the decision is decisive and cannot easily be challenged.

Frequently Asked Questions

The dress code is simple, for formal meetings it is, Dark suit with a Black or masonic tie!

We are a new, university scheme lodge, we are full of potential and evolving all the time. We have a range of ages in our lodge, from all different backgrounds. Find out more about us here

There are three ‘degree ceremonies’ performed during masonic meetings. They are essentially one act plays and teach members how to be better people and each play represents a different stage in life.

As an ‘initiate’ or Entered Apprentice, Freemasons are taught we are all born equal, we learn that in life some do better than others and it is up to those that do well to look after the less fortunate. From this stems our belief in the importance of Charity.

The next stage is to become a ‘Fellow Craft’ where Freemasons are taught the importance of improving yourself as a person, and finally as a ‘Master Mason’, where we learn that we have but one life, and the importance of using it wisely.

The details of the ceremonies can easily be accessed online but nothing beats experiencing it for yourself. After the meetings members dine together informally in order to enjoy good food, good wine, and good company. And most importantly, to have fun together.

When becoming a Freemason, members are expected to be able to affirm a belief in a ‘Supreme Being’.

This is deliberately phrased so as to be fully inclusive; most of our members generally believe in a God - be it Christian, Muslim, Sikh or Jewish etc - of some sort, and there is no requirement to be an active practitioner of any particular religion.
